Book Commissions and Initiatives
To reach our goal of giving away one million books, we partner
with like-minded institutions to publish relevant books for kids.
Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan
CANVAS is committed to making its books as accessible as possible. This is why we give our books away and make them downloadable free of charge. It is also why we have partnered with Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK), the country’s only organization of illustrators for children.
Their knowledge of, and concern for, children help us make our books age-appropriate, appealing, and relevant to our young readers.
We first worked with them on Karapat Dapat, an internationally-acclaimed book on the rights of the child. Our second collaboration, I am the Change in Climate Change, was released August of this year.
A Bridge for Silay
This story is based on the legend of Puente del Diablo in Talim Island, the largest lake island in Laguna Bay. Together with The Working Animals Art Projects and writer Agay Llanera, we collected the stories passed on throughout the generations of families in the island.
Although Puente del Diablo (Devil’s Bridge) in Barangay Pila-pila in Binangonan, Rizal is not officially part of Talim Island, its proximity to the dagger-shaped island makes it a popular stopover of tourists in the area. With its rocks seemingly fashioned into blocks shooting up twenty meters into the sky and reaching out a hundred meters into the water, Puente del Diablo looks like an unfinished stone bridge.
Ronson Culibrina, the creator of the artworks for the project exhibition and publication, resides on Talim Island.
Safe Space and #YOUTHink
“Explaining data privacy and fake news to children can be challenging,” says Gigo Alampay, CANVAS executive director and author of the books, “but we think this is important information that children and teens should know. These books will help them build their skills in keeping themselves and their data safe, as well as differentiating what is fact or fake.”
CANVAS partnered with Google and Globe to produce these zine-style fact books for children and teens, empowering them to keep themselves safe online.
My Super Hands
Recognizing children’s right to information, especially with regards to their wellbeing amid the COVID-19 pandemic, CANVAS and the Australian Embassy in the Philippines collaborated on this book project to inform and involve children in the discussion of COVID-19 and how we can adapt meaningfully in these extraordinary times.
Along with this book, CANVAS developed a series of infographics dealing with various COVID-19 related issues, including internet safety for teens, surfing tips for kids, and tips for parents on how to talk to their children about the pandemic.
Panyaan: Three Tales of the Tagbanua
“Panyáan: Three Tales of the Tagbanua” is the fruit of the creative partnership between CANVAS and the ECOFISH Project. The three original children’s stories that make up this book, while fictional, are all based on the traditions, surroundings and heritage of the Tagbanuas of Palawan.
