The Center for Art, New Ventures, and Sustainable Development is pleased to announce the results from its 31st Romeo Forbes Children's Story Writing Competition. Tanya Sevilla Simon won forty-five thousand pesos for her story Emong and the Ear

Tanya Sevilla Simon currently teaches literature and art appreciation courses with the Department of Literature at De La Salle University - Manila. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from De La Salle University - Manila and was a fellow of the 1998 Silliman University National Summer Writers Workshop. From 2012 to 2018, Ms Sevilla was a contributing editor and columnist for the magazine Going Places by Manila Bulletin. She is the author of How Long Till September? (Adarna House) and a co-author of the three-part My Bayani children’s book series (Rex Bookstore).

Congratulations also go to Christopher Rosales for his story Sa Iisang Batya which was selected as a Finalist. A total of 87 entries, all based on the artwork by Edrick Daniel, were received for this competition.

CANVAS holds the Romeo Forbes Children's Story Writing Competition at least twice a year, open to Filipinos worldwide. The first and only of its kind, it invites writers to pen a children’s story inspired by a painting or sculpture by CANVAS’ chosen local Filipino artist.

That same artist will then bring the winning story to life through a series of around 20 new artworks. These are finally showcased in a major solo exhibition and used as illustrations for the ultimate offspring of this unique collaboration: a full-color children’s book which could reach public schools and communities in the Philippines under CANVAS’ One Million Books for One Million Filipino Children Campaign.
